ENO lesson: The Place We Live In

Hello! My name is Ashton and I am in 8th grade. I go to Alexander Dawson School in
Lafeyette, Co. My school has 420 students, k-12th grade. I am 13 years old and I live in
Boulder, Co. I have a mom, a dad, a sister, and 2 dogs. When my parents first moved to
Our neighborhood in 1992, there were no businesses and no houses, only farms and a dirt
road. Now there are many restaurants, a movie theater, a mall, a four lane road, a
hospital, a supermarket, a few schools, and numerous neighborhoods.
The changes in the environment are much better for people than land and animals.
Because of the development there is loss of open space and loss of room for animals.
The animals are moved from their homes to other areas to make way for more
development. Colorado has had many droughts that people contribute to
by using too much water to wash their cars, water their lawns, and take long showers.
The development has helped lots of people, especially the development of a new hospital.
Now people don’t have to travel very far to get the help they need. They also don’t have
to grow their own food, they came get food down the street from the local super market.
The development of new schools is good for the children of the community. They no
longer have to take-over the family farm, they can be educated in grade school and then
maybe go to college and become a successful business man or woman, or a doctor, or an
archeologist.
From: victor otieno. To: Ashton.

Hi ashton,I am glad to have this opportunity to write for you this letter. First I would like to thank god for the gift of life that he has given to us, and also to thank you for your letter that you sent to us.
I am a boy of age 17,and I am taking my studies in st.peters kotieno mixed secondary school .this year I am in form four two and I hope to join form three coming next year. in.
I come from a village called kotieno at a home known as Karogo? We stay with our old grand mother who is taking care of us. This is because our parents died long time ago. I have two sisters and three brothers of mine are in primary school, and Linda Atieno and we are in secondary school.

In Kotieno which is our village, people are practicing mixed farming. It I done in very small area because this place is occupied by many people, which has led to no land for faming. The following are some of crops that we grow. In our village; maize, sorghum, potatoes, yams etc. and some of the animals that are kept include cattle, goat, sheep and hen. These animals sometimes are affected by diseases that kills them very fast before they are treated. People are also attacked by this diseases that mighty lead to their death if they are not treated properly.
The environment of our village looks beautiful. And climatic conditions is also friendly to human being and this has made a lot people to settle here, and enjoys all things together with us. and I hope that if God allows you, you will come so that we share all the necessary things together.

We stay near two open air markets i.e. Oyugis and Ruga. This places started as small centres of trade, but with time they have grown very large. Especially Oyugis town and this has made it to be known all over the world. Due to new technology. A lot of things are now found in Oyugis town and other places around it. For instance we have computers commercial centres, electric power, tractors that are used for ploughing, learning institutious and others.
In our village I am among the children who are in secondary school, though some failed to join secondary school or drop out before finishing form 4 due to some problems such as school fee.
But with me, I hope to finish form four and continue with my learning to the higher institutions of learning as you support me. I m praying for you so that God may be with you and bless you. And hope you are also doing so to me.

OMINDI MAULINE
FORM 2

Hellow! My name is Mauline and I am in form 2. I go to Mithui mixed secondary school in Kokal. My school has 330 students it reaches form 3. I am 15 years old and one day. When my parent first move to Oyugis in 1981, there were businesses, many houses, farms and dirt road.

Those days there are many restaurants, lodging schools, a movies theater, e-mail supermarkets and many neighborhoods. The changes in the environment for are much better for people and even animals, because of the development in farming business and even building structures. The animals stay constantly because people can feed them the way it is required. Kagwat has not had any drought the rain is falling every year and the farm structures are doing well, the animals and human being had plenty of water for drinking and cooking even for taking long showers.

The development has help lots of people, especially development of schools. So students don’t move very far to get learning and even dispensaries are introduced in our area. They grow their own food. They are taking their vegetables, maize, potatoes and even cassava to the market to sell for other people.
The development of new nursery for the children in the community. They no longer take-over the family farm they are suppose to be educated upto form 4 and then upto university where you’re going to graduate to be a doctor, a nurse, a pilot an engineer and help the house-hold.

FROM PHILIP ODHIAMBO
TO ASHTON

I’m happy to receive the little bit of introduction you’ve done to us through sending us a letter on 13 September 2006. we got your introduction and all we are happy to receive your first introduction to us.
I’m a student at Nyangiela Secondary School. I’m in second form. 14 years of age and holds the third position of birth. That is I’m the third born in our family.
I stay with an uncle of mine simple because my Mom and Dad passed away some years back. I have some pets of which I depend on most and I love them.
The type of environment of the area we are living is so much different from that one used to see while I was still young. Roads were murram and dusty during dry seasons while muddy during rainy seasons.
Schools could be found rarely and today there are many schools around. Urbanization have been developed in one of the recent market centre ‘Oyugis’ which is now the biggest town in Rachuonyo. (My District).
Technology devices have been introduced to Oyugis town and this has brought a lot of ease in communication, use of machineries and other technologies.
My home is called Ko-Odhiambo derived from my father’s name Odhiambo. In my village ‘Kobala’ some improvements have been seen. This is because there are some new things which were not there in the past like schools, churches and medical centers.
Mostly our people depend on plant fold. This is to say that they mostly depend on food from plants and not from animals. There are plants planted mostly for commercial use. Some are also planted for subsistance use. But the people of my village mostly plant subsistance crops.
The main activity that I do engage myself in during my free times is seed collection, that is to say that my hobby is collecting seeds from different varieties of plants and bringing up the young seedlings. This I’m doing to provide wealthy and healthy environment.
By now I’m focusing ahead so that I sit for my final examination ‘K.C.S.E.’ [Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education] so that I prosper my education wider.
