Climate Change, USA

Global Warming and Climate Change

Greenhouse gases, say some scientists, are the leading cause of climate change. Greenhouse gases are gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, and nitrous oxide. All of these gases occur naturally, but human production of these gases through uses of such things as cars, trucks and smokestacks. When the climate changes, weather changes along with it, causing things such as floods, droughts, and other types of extreme weather. In northern Alaska, residents are feeling the pressing matter of a heating climate. In their towns, they are dealing with issues such as rising sea levels, melting permafrost, and increased costal erosion, sending houses and roads straight into the sea. An effect of climate change is also forest fires, when forests are burned during a natural fire, or to clear land for housing, it releases carbon dioxide, a cause of global warming and therefore climate change, which causes the droughts and then the forest fires again.
Alaska has been identified to be the main concern of Global Warming. Artic Climate Impact Assessment reports that the Arctic has lost about 15 % to 20 % of their ice. This takes away the habitat of the natural fauna, including ducks and other waterfowl. Another one of the big effects of Global warming is that polar bears have been drowning after looking for scarce Arctic ice. Polar bears have been added to the “Red List” of major threatened species for extinction.
Global Warming has also caused the bird population’s Seasonal Migration to be interrupted, as well as prematurely waking up animals such as bears from hibernation, as well as the scarce availability of foods at the time animals seek them out. Also, pollinating insects might not be able to get to flowers in time. Ocean life has also been threatened by this warming. Two coral species have been added to the USA’s threatened list because of the major loss of coral, the second largest ecosystem. Temperatures rising in the water as well as harmful hurricanes have caused the significant loss of coral. Certain species of animals have been wiped out such as the American pika, and species of harlequin frogs as another effect of Global Warming.
In 1988 in the American Midwest there was a terrible drought. Corn that usually grew to 3 feet at the height of growing season grew to only a foot, if even. Many farmers lost a lot of money that year when the crops failed and we had to get our corn shipped in from other countries. Then in 1989 the number of corn farmers was down because many farmers couldn’t afford water and seeds because they had very little, if no profits from the previous year. Scientist believes that global warming caused this drought.
Another problem with global warming and its effects on agriculture is climate change. When the climate in an area changes it allows foreign plants to grow in crop fields. These plants may take over and choke the crops and native plants that are part of a state’s agricultural economy.
If we don’t try to stop global warming our agricultural economy will decline and maybe even crash. Other countries that rely on us for corn, beef, and potatoes will go hungry. We must educate ourselves on global warming so that we can invent new things like hydrogen cars, and new refrigerators to stop the greenhouse effect, before it’s to late.

ENO activity: Climate Change

KENYA
CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate is one of the factors that control the life of human being i.e. how he lives and carry out his economic activities especially agriculture. Due to the change in climate all the living organisms have suffered most because of the new environment that they were not used. This change in climate has led to many effect/ impacts of it to the surrounding.

First it has led to the low production of crops. Crops need adequate rainfall for them to do well, but this has been hindered by very little rainfall in same areas. The low amount of rain received also leads to desertification i.e. the desert increase in its geographical area. How production of crops also leads to decrease in population. This is because some individuals lost their lives due to hunger, and low reproduction rate cause by luck of energy in the body.

Climate change has also led to frequent flooding in other areas or parts of the world. The flooding leads to lost of life, and spreading of some water borne diseases which interfears with our body functioning and some times caused death. Skin cancer has also been caused by hot climate. This is due to the strong ultra violet rays of the sun. skin cancer is uncurable disease and there. Fore it make many people to perish, and this leads to reduction in economic development.

Climate change has also led to the migration of people to other areas with condiusive climate which is good for human settlement. It has also led to the change of dressing ways as in some places it is very cold and need heavy clothes to provide warmth to the body while in some hot areas very light clothes are needed to protect the body.

The main causes of climate change are human being, who has caused desertification to a great extent by cutting down trees. Therefore to control this we should plant more trees instead of cutting them. Another cause which can be said to be greatest is the nature act of God e.g. low amount of rain in the other parts of the world, hunger, temperature, flooding etc. this ones can only be controlled by praying to God to have mercy on as, and also to provide us with more effective ways controlling the change in climate.

Causes of climate change
„X During the earth revolution of the sun, the change in sun¡¦s position lead to either increase a decreases the surface temperature.
„X The burning of fuels lads to ozone layer diplation hence global worming.
„X Manufacturing of certain toxic chemicals may lead to global warming and hence climate change.
„X The amount of solar intensity also causes climatic change.
„X The change in polarity of the earths magnetic field may influence the upper atmosphere which in turn changes the whole.
„X The change in polarity of the earth¡¦s magnetic field.
„X Clearing of forest leads to low rates of carbon dioxide for absorption hence global warming.
„X Volcanic activities which provide huge amount of particles heat water vapour as well as emission of gases which absorbs radiant heat.

Impacts of climate change.
„X There is wide spread changes in the natural echo system with grassland and desert areas expanding but forested areas are reducing.
„X Thermal expansion of oceans and lakes leads to sea level rise hence causing flooding of low land areas.
„X High global temperature leads to evaporation and may in turn cause a lot of rain in some areas.
„X Global warming leads to mass destruction of property like plants wilting and animals die due to luck of enough pasture hence lads to drought and famine therefore claim many lives.
„X Climatic change may affect the hydrological cycle.
„X Wetter and warmer temperature may increase the rate of pest and diseases, which destroy plants and claim livestock lives.

Pledges to climatic change
„X Planting more trees to attract rain and maintain the hydrological circle.
„X Inventing the alternative source of fuels that cannot cause global worming.
„X Educating people on how importance the forest are.
„X Stop burning of charcoals in forested areas and even cutting down trees.
„X Determining the systematic way of cutting the trees where by the only mature trees are the ones to be cut and in paddocks and after cutting them. Ones are also planted.

ENO activity: Our town in 1956, today and in 2056.

KE02

DESCRIPTION OF MY CITY IN 50 YEARS TIME

My city Oyugis in the year 2056 will be greatly improved due to high technological know how and improvements within it sociality of the people living at current has ever create room for forign investments as even today goods from Kisii land and Kikuyu land finds their way into the city freely. This as also attracted neighboring tribes like the Masai¡¦s to invest in trading with the people of my city.

Due to the introduction of challenge of ¡¥zozo¡¦ people are going to be taught the benefit of controlling the environment hence will provide conducive environment that will improve the status of the city.

Their will be also the development of good transport and communication net work that will easean the transportation and distribution of messages to where they are needed.

Due to the improvement in technology, their will be also the development of air stripes and air ports that will ensure faster transportation of perishable goods and urgent messages.

With the existence of good climatic conditions, people will start planting cash crops resulting into plantation farming. This will ensure and promote putting up of industries to manufacture the finished product with the development of industries, it will form source of environment to most of the unemployment cases will be gratefully reduced. Availability of job opportunities will ensure high living standard of people.

There will also the development of communication system that will greatly attract many customers to start their business ¡V due to the existence of ODINO electric power station, the city will allover have electricity supply and will also provide power for the operation of computers and other machines.

The city will also have piped water to all his inhabitants especially from ¡¥Atemo¡¦ that currently supply the city with clean water and will be highly developed. Concerning the people involving themselves in plantation farming, the existing Ayoro cooperative society will be greatly develop thus will be profitable to share-holders.

Due to industrialization, many people will migrate from rural to urban to such for jobs hence will greatly affect production of goods and raw materials from the rural areas. This will result into labour shortage in the plantation farms. The city will be very much secured as the population will be great.

Some parts of the city which experiences draughts will be irrigated as water from Lake Victoria will be used in the plantation farms. Due to great population in the city, it will lead to high conjesion of the available infrastructurethus will result into the development of slums in the city. High population result into high crime rate in the city. Since the cars will be many it will result into unnecessary traffic jams this will result into insecurity in the city.

During the process of manufacturing from the industries, there will be high emission of toxic fumes and gases from the industries that causes pollution. All the offices that will be built and other houses, they will be built using gasses thus will improve the status of the city.

There will be also the development of highways, terminals railways stations and round ¡V about. All these will help to reduce the occurrence of accidents. All the people will get used to the internet thus people will not go to school but will just learn and taught through computers. This will also enhance the economy of the city as people will not go to meetings in persons but will discuss and had conference using computers.

By those years, our city will have goods at high prices thus will not be available to the poor.

jewelry sales and brochure

Dear Nyanduma students,

Hi, my name is Marci from the Dawson Eno Group. I am trying to make brochures about the jewelry you sent us for when we sell it. If you could tell me more information about the jewelry, like where it’s from, when or why you wear it, if it means anything special, the history. Then people who buy it will know the significance of it.
I would also like to make a brochure about information on Eno and what we do. So if you would like to send us information on why you like Eno and what you have learned, that would be really great to put in the brochure. I really appreciate it.

THANKS,
Marci

Digital Divide discussion:

FROM PHILLIP ODHIAMBO

1. Why is there a digital divide?
2. What should be done so that all countries have access to computers and Internets?

To answer these questions l would first of all try and define a digital device as the uneven distribution of technology and its usage around the world. These digital divides come as a result of some developments that take place every now and then.

Through the development that have been taking place from some 50 years back, its observable that the divides have emerged all over the world and this include even around the place l'm living. For example, use of computer is now rampant in Kenya and it is soon going to be used locally as televisions. Another development is the use of cellphones . cell phones are small and easy to carry and can perform a very important role for human communication.

After connecting computers and internets to the internet; Those individuals with more resources should fund technology sharing; technology clubs should be created for both girls and boys; older students should teach younger classes about their use. Internet clubs should be created for senior citizens. The governments should create internet centres for all schools in all countries. We should also come up with some solutions for education and health sector so that we can have the ability of operating the computers and any other electric device.

By doing all those we will have access to computers and internets because everybody all over the world shall find it enjoyable to use The (www.worldcomputerexchange.org) as a free communication organization in the world.

l'm Odhiambo Philip. l'm 14 years old. l go to Nyangela secondary school. l'm in my tenth year in school that is l'm in form two. l have 4 brothers and 2 sisters. l don't have both parents and l stay with my younger brother in our home compound.

I happened to become an orphan in the year 2000 when my mother died and after a short time my father follow. Though it is a suffering, but with gos everything is possible. l hope that God will be with those my family members.

I have a guardian but my younger brother who is in class 4 is not so well, he normally become sick of traditional herbs that l happened to learn from my grandmother.

TO MICHAEL

We are part of Kenya ENO group living in Oyugis, Rachuonyo District. During our Leisure we always spent a lot od our time watering our Nursery taking part in games and reading novels.

Hi l’m Victor Otieno, l do play and watch games and l go to St. Peter’s Kotieno Secondary school. We are fourty one students in our class, 27 boys and 14 girls. My age is 17 years. Both my parents died and l stays with my grandmother! I have two sisters and two brothers who are in Primary school. My eldest sisters will complete her secondary education next year.

In our community we practice mixed farming I.e. we grow crops for subsistence and commercial use. Such crops include Maize, sorghum, tomatoes, bananas, vegetables, fruits, cassava, coffee, tea and sugarcane.

We also rare livestock; cattle, goat, sheep, poultry and rabbit. We also have pets e.g cats and dogs.

We would like to be in contact with the Colorado state University students to get more information , agriculture research on how to improve irrigation, fertilizers and soil quality.

We would like to know how you carry out your cultivation and the typr of farming that you do. You have talked of herbs do you use them locally or you ferry them to the factory for processing.

I look forward to get feedback from you.

Your friend,

Victor Otieno

Group discussion
Challenge 20/20
To Hannah and Ashton
For the projectChallenge
1.How computers can help or educate 20/20
-Through computers and Internet educational exchange programmes can be enhanced
interms of speed for the exchange of education is faster and detailed.
-Through Internet we can get sources for research in historical and geographical even
medical and commercial matters.
-Computers can help in data, analysis and typing even storage of our educational
materials
-Computers are liable in research as for weather forcast hence accuracy in the fields
related.
2.Access to Computers
-Correctly we are not accessed to computers.
-If we had access to computers then our exchange programmes with you would have been known more on globalisation and share our lives with the rest of the world.
-We will also type, store and send informations.
-Involvement in ENO is just but very educative as we share agricultural knowledge which can help us improve or production locally and even tell others how some of the things we do locally are similar or better than theirs.
3.Other electronic devices that would help bridge digital divide are:
-Mobile phones would help in idea exchange though text message service and verbal
Communication
-Television programmes may be educative as in during news on research and other
lifestyles in international news.
-Surveillance cameras would help enhance security as every activity is surprised.
-News from radios are informative in Eveready’s life and connects you to the rest of the
world.
-Fax machine, pagers may help in information transfer and communication causes of
digital divide
-Computer illiteracy among the digital left community as many can handle computers or
digital gadget
-Poverty as mostly e-mails are paid for in those countries hence many can not afford the
cost.
-The cost of acquiring and maintenance of digital devices are high as their spares are hard
to fund locally.
-Many are under educated or no educational at all hence cannot handle digital devices.
-Power source for operating the digital devices is scarce or not at all in some areas
especially rural.
-Cost of computers is high.
Solutions to digital device
-People be educated to be able to handle the digital gadgets.
-Cost of computers studies be reduced and many computers to be installed in school for
learners to get accessed to them.
-Cost of acquiring the gadgets be reduced and spares be ready available to lessen the
Maintance
-People be trained on handling the digital gadgets and repair for lessening the maintaince
-Government should enhance power supply to moral areas so as to expose them to the
digital world.
-Thorough education on proper use of digital devices be enhanced to reduce peoples
fobia for them and protect their pollution to the environment as in dispersal of batteries
properly to reduce the harzards of the chemicals.
-Making of the gadgets should be enhanced to increase their durability to cope up with
the challenges of new inventions.
Our questions,
Q .Are there computer illiteracy cases in your area? How do people cope with them and
solutions.
Q .Is sending and reception of emails costly in your state? How do people cope with
them .Are they discouraged from sending e-mails?
Q .Are trainings on computer studies expensive in your state?how are they carried out.
Q .Are these changes for reception of other channels in T.Vs, computer, radios.
Q .Are there places without electricity or is there power loss in your area how do you feel
about them.

We’re looking forward for your answers from friends
Paul,Enoch,Beryll,Godwin.

WHY ARE PEOPLE NOT HAVING COMPUTERS
Many people do not have computers due to the following reasons.
1.It is expensive to buy.many people cannot afford to buy computers because they don’t
have enough money.
2. It is difficult to repair incase it is broken down.
3.Computers need a well-trained person to operate it Most people who lack skill find it
hard to operate the machine thus discouraging them from buying it.
4.Computers use a lot of power therefore it cannot be operated where there is no power
especially in the rural areas and some urban centres where electricity is not available.
5.Mnay people find it difficult in sending their email.

WHY IS THERE DIFFERENCE IN USING COMPUTERS,HAVING COMPUTERS AND NOT USING COMPUTERS
Computer is an electronic machine which is used to send and receive information.they are not used equally in the world .For example, in Kenya it is used by a well trained person who is able to operate the machine. Computers are used only by the rich people who live in town where there is electrictity. In operating computers well educated person is required.

HOW CAN PEOPLE BE ABLE TO HAVE COMPUTERS
Many people can be able to have computers due to the following.
1.People should be trained on how to repair their going round looking for a person who
can repair it.
2.Source of power should be available in rural area and urban centres in order to operate
the computers
3.People should be trained on how to operate computers.
4.When computers cost is reduced to a certain amount so as to encourage many people
to buy it.
5. People should form groups of about five to ten members so that they can contribute
some amount of money and buy computers

DIGITAL DIVIDENT

CAUSES OF DIGITAL DIFFERENCES

It is due to poverty from many people this is because there in not much capital

This is because it is costly thus it requires much money for it to function.

Are not easy to maintain as it’s prone to breakage.

Need sources of power that is not affordable in rural areas

It needs trained personel which require a lot of money which is not easily available due to the economic scale of the country.

Due to training involved, people don’t prefer them an d are not able to send their email addresses.

There is computer illitracy especially in developing countries.

WHY PEOPLE ARE NOT HAVING IT.

It’s expensive to requires a lot of money to buy and maintain it.

It requires a lot of fuel: In it’s operation it requires electricity for it to function properly.

Are delicate They are prone to breakage and their spare parts are not available.

Training; The training involved is not easy thus many people don’t like it;

Only rich people could use them

HOW CAN PEOPLE BE ABLE TO HAVE IT.

By introducing computer studies especially on high schools for people to get access to them.

By people forming groups and contributing sums to buy one.

If it’s cost is reduced hence many people will be attracted to it.

When Government imports more computers hence reduction in their cost.

Bridging the Digital Divide

Dear Danish, Silvance, and Florence,
Our names are Hannah & Ashton and we go to your sister school Dawson.
For the Challenge 20/20 project we would like to ask you a few questions.
First we would like to know: how can computers help your education?
Computers have helped our education by offering research resources, graphs and data tables, typing documents and Internet access. We use the Internet for looking at pictures, reading documents, emails, research options, and the ENO program.
We would also like to know if you had access to computers would they help those who can’t afford school? Would being involved with ENO and other Internet courses help get you an education? What other electronic devices would help bridge the Digital Divide?
We look forward to your answers, and working to bridge the Digital Divide with you.

We are a part of the Dawson ENO group. We live in Boulder, Colorado, USA. In our free time some activates that we do are skiing, playing sports and playing with our friends.
Hi my name is Michael. I like to play basketball and I go to the Dawson school. There are a lot of kids in my class. I am 14 years old and I have a mom and dad. I also have a brother and a sister.
Hi I am Trevy. I am 14 years old. I have mom and a dad and a brother and sister. My brother is in the last year of high school. My sister is in her last year of college.
In our community there is a lot of farming. We grow corn, herbs, pumpkins, and trees. At the Colorado State University there is advanced agriculture research. We were wondering if you would like to be in contact with them. You could ask them for information on improving irrigation, fertilizers, and soil quality. I think that they would be interested in learning what you are doing with your crops
We are looking forward to hearing back from you.

ENO lesson: The Place We Live In

Hello! My name is Ashton and I am in 8th grade. I go to Alexander Dawson School in
Lafeyette, Co. My school has 420 students, k-12th grade. I am 13 years old and I live in
Boulder, Co. I have a mom, a dad, a sister, and 2 dogs. When my parents first moved to
Our neighborhood in 1992, there were no businesses and no houses, only farms and a dirt
road. Now there are many restaurants, a movie theater, a mall, a four lane road, a
hospital, a supermarket, a few schools, and numerous neighborhoods.
The changes in the environment are much better for people than land and animals.
Because of the development there is loss of open space and loss of room for animals.
The animals are moved from their homes to other areas to make way for more
development. Colorado has had many droughts that people contribute to
by using too much water to wash their cars, water their lawns, and take long showers.
The development has helped lots of people, especially the development of a new hospital.
Now people don’t have to travel very far to get the help they need. They also don’t have
to grow their own food, they came get food down the street from the local super market.
The development of new schools is good for the children of the community. They no
longer have to take-over the family farm, they can be educated in grade school and then
maybe go to college and become a successful business man or woman, or a doctor, or an
archeologist.
From: victor otieno. To: Ashton.

Hi ashton,I am glad to have this opportunity to write for you this letter. First I would like to thank god for the gift of life that he has given to us, and also to thank you for your letter that you sent to us.
I am a boy of age 17,and I am taking my studies in st.peters kotieno mixed secondary school .this year I am in form four two and I hope to join form three coming next year. in.
I come from a village called kotieno at a home known as Karogo? We stay with our old grand mother who is taking care of us. This is because our parents died long time ago. I have two sisters and three brothers of mine are in primary school, and Linda Atieno and we are in secondary school.

In Kotieno which is our village, people are practicing mixed farming. It I done in very small area because this place is occupied by many people, which has led to no land for faming. The following are some of crops that we grow. In our village; maize, sorghum, potatoes, yams etc. and some of the animals that are kept include cattle, goat, sheep and hen. These animals sometimes are affected by diseases that kills them very fast before they are treated. People are also attacked by this diseases that mighty lead to their death if they are not treated properly.
The environment of our village looks beautiful. And climatic conditions is also friendly to human being and this has made a lot people to settle here, and enjoys all things together with us. and I hope that if God allows you, you will come so that we share all the necessary things together.

We stay near two open air markets i.e. Oyugis and Ruga. This places started as small centres of trade, but with time they have grown very large. Especially Oyugis town and this has made it to be known all over the world. Due to new technology. A lot of things are now found in Oyugis town and other places around it. For instance we have computers commercial centres, electric power, tractors that are used for ploughing, learning institutious and others.
In our village I am among the children who are in secondary school, though some failed to join secondary school or drop out before finishing form 4 due to some problems such as school fee.
But with me, I hope to finish form four and continue with my learning to the higher institutions of learning as you support me. I m praying for you so that God may be with you and bless you. And hope you are also doing so to me.

OMINDI MAULINE
FORM 2

Hellow! My name is Mauline and I am in form 2. I go to Mithui mixed secondary school in Kokal. My school has 330 students it reaches form 3. I am 15 years old and one day. When my parent first move to Oyugis in 1981, there were businesses, many houses, farms and dirt road.

Those days there are many restaurants, lodging schools, a movies theater, e-mail supermarkets and many neighborhoods. The changes in the environment for are much better for people and even animals, because of the development in farming business and even building structures. The animals stay constantly because people can feed them the way it is required. Kagwat has not had any drought the rain is falling every year and the farm structures are doing well, the animals and human being had plenty of water for drinking and cooking even for taking long showers.

The development has help lots of people, especially development of schools. So students don’t move very far to get learning and even dispensaries are introduced in our area. They grow their own food. They are taking their vegetables, maize, potatoes and even cassava to the market to sell for other people.
The development of new nursery for the children in the community. They no longer take-over the family farm they are suppose to be educated upto form 4 and then upto university where you’re going to graduate to be a doctor, a nurse, a pilot an engineer and help the house-hold.

FROM PHILIP ODHIAMBO
TO ASHTON

I’m happy to receive the little bit of introduction you’ve done to us through sending us a letter on 13 September 2006. we got your introduction and all we are happy to receive your first introduction to us.
I’m a student at Nyangiela Secondary School. I’m in second form. 14 years of age and holds the third position of birth. That is I’m the third born in our family.
I stay with an uncle of mine simple because my Mom and Dad passed away some years back. I have some pets of which I depend on most and I love them.
The type of environment of the area we are living is so much different from that one used to see while I was still young. Roads were murram and dusty during dry seasons while muddy during rainy seasons.
Schools could be found rarely and today there are many schools around. Urbanization have been developed in one of the recent market centre ‘Oyugis’ which is now the biggest town in Rachuonyo. (My District).
Technology devices have been introduced to Oyugis town and this has brought a lot of ease in communication, use of machineries and other technologies.
My home is called Ko-Odhiambo derived from my father’s name Odhiambo. In my village ‘Kobala’ some improvements have been seen. This is because there are some new things which were not there in the past like schools, churches and medical centers.
Mostly our people depend on plant fold. This is to say that they mostly depend on food from plants and not from animals. There are plants planted mostly for commercial use. Some are also planted for subsistance use. But the people of my village mostly plant subsistance crops.
The main activity that I do engage myself in during my free times is seed collection, that is to say that my hobby is collecting seeds from different varieties of plants and bringing up the young seedlings. This I’m doing to provide wealthy and healthy environment.
By now I’m focusing ahead so that I sit for my final examination ‘K.C.S.E.’ [Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education] so that I prosper my education wider.
